This two day masterclass empowers and connects through visual storytelling. Aiming to remove the typical impressions of the word ‘aging' and the ideas about the elderly. Participants will interact directly with the elderly in the nursing home setting. Producing an individual body of work alongside the artist that harnesses the spirit of the people and their stories.

Hanne van der Woude befriended an elderly graphic artist named Ben Joosten and asked to take his portrait, six years later she finalized the series Emmy’s World. After meeting Ben she was invited to his house, an old school building in Betuwe, in the eastern Netherlands, there she met his wife, Emmy Eerdmans, a painter. Among these rather eccentric characters, undoubtedly Emmy was the most authentic. Although in her 80s, she worked all day long and nursed Ben when he fell ill and finally died. This somewhat offbeat work is the result of a long-term collaboration between an ever-creative elderly artist couple and a young photographer. It stands as testament to the universal themes of friendship across generations and abiding marital love. Emmy’s World has previously been shown at Huis Marseille, Museum for Photography, Amsterdam (2015) and Fotographie Forum Frankfurt (2016), and proudly welcomed to KYOTOGRAPHIE in 2017.

"They have as many stories as the years they’ve lived for. In the process of developing visual stories based on dialogic communications, we could construct ties with them, even friendships. This is particularly important in the era which offers more division in methods and less opportunities for inter-generational communication.” Hanne Van der Woude
