Master Class 2018

Gideon Mendelギデオン・メンデル

Memory and Materiality
記憶と有形性 – 形を持つということ –

4/15, 4/16|10:00 – 18:00

Wanderers Stand 2nd floor
Ichihata Bulding 2nd Floor, 58Yaoya-Cho, Shimo, Kyoto-City 600-8321

Working alongside Mendel, participants will focus on visual responses to their personal items, learning how to photograph them to convey meaning. This will be an active hands-on masterclass with a conceptual overlay consisting of a series of individual and group feedback sessions. All participants will be expected to bring digital cameras and laptops to allow for rapid experimentation and assessment of work. At the conclusion of the masterclass each participant will have produced their own set of images, but the dialogue within the group is crucial so the final output is also a group endeavor: a lattice of images and memory connecting all the people taking part. This masterclass will equip participants with the tools to document and story tell. Personal artifacts could include documents, objects, even the non-physical like anecdotes relating to their own emotional and social legacy.

"I believe that certain objects that relate to our lives carry a powerful energy. Many of these connect us to to our personal history, and perhaps point towards our future. I have been called a ‘contemporary archeologist’, pondering the significance of artifacts before the residue of time accumulates. The challenge for us as photographers and artists is to find ways to represent and document these items in ways that compound their meaning and tell a compelling story."
